Accounting Manager
Accounting Manager – Nonprofit Organization (Hartford, CT) Compensation: Up to $35/hour Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm (35 hours/week) Work Arrangement: Fully Onsite Reports To: VP of Finance Direct Reports: 5 Software: Excel, BlackBaud A Hartford-based nonprofit is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee core accounting operations, lead a small team, and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting. This role is ideal for a detail‑driven professional who thrives in a mission‑focused environment and enjoys improving processes, supporting staff, and maintaining strong financial controls. Essential Functions + Oversees key accounting functions including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger entries, and monthly/annual close processes. + Develops and maintains accounting policies and procedures to support current and future organizational needs. + Ensures financial reporting tools and processes operate effectively and remain accurate and reliable. + Confirms all entries related to monthly and annual close are posted in a timely and accurate manner. + Reviews monthly cost allocations including depreciation, accrued payroll, accrued vacation, indirect entries, and reallocations tied to personnel actions. + Approves and posts monthly journal entries prepared by accounting staff. + Manages timekeeping systems and processes, including compliance reviews, training for timekeepers, and system improvements. + Monitors timekeeping tools for cost efficiency and opportunities for modernization. + Directs payroll processing to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and proper internal controls; serves as backup payroll processor. + Serves as point of contact for wage garnishment vendors and processes garnishments when needed. + Creates and supports financial and payroll reports using appropriate reporting tools; maintains data integrity through queries and analysis. + Prepares payroll journal entries and reconciles amounts with third‑party payroll provider data. + Maintains compliance with federal and state payroll regulations and stays current with changes in legislation. + Ensures GAAP‑compliant financial reporting and proper recordkeeping. + Provides financial insights to the CFO to support organizational decision‑making. + Leads hiring, training, and retention of accounting team members. + Provides coaching and professional development to accounting staff. + Drives continuous improvement of accounting systems, workflows, and financial processes. + Promotes strong teamwork and customer service within the department and across the organization. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.67 - $35.22/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
