Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for one (1) permanent, full-time position of Accountant with Finance & Asset Management.

Reporting to the Manager of Budget and Reserves, the Accountant performs various accounting and reporting activities of the HRM operating, reserve and capital budgets.  Their work ensures that Business Units are able to monitor their financials and project their position within the current budget year to ensure that HRM’s financial statements are delivered in an accurate and timely manner.  The Accountant provides excellent customer service to HRM staff, vendors, financial institutions, and other levels of government.  

The Accountant pays close attention to detail to ensure that the information reported is correct.  They are expected to recognize areas where improvements and efficiencies can be made and proactively identify and recommend solutions for errors or service gaps.  Working collaboratively with members of the teams within the division they support, they use their knowledge of accounting principles and practices to ensure accurate financial information is captured.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides input and advice to Business Units on new processes and efficienciesDemonstrates appropriate knowledge of accounting principles and internal controls and has the ability to apply themReviews and responds to financial requests and inquiries from all levels of HRM employees, including Regional CouncilEnsures completeness of expenses by capturing all invoices in the correct pay periods including accruals and prepaidsAnalyzes financial information to provide information and produce required reports for HRM staffAssists other Finance staff with special projects and reportsMay perform other duties as requiredQUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:Grade 12 and successful completion of a Diploma or Certificate program in Business with a focus in AccountingCompletion of two years of a recognized professional accounting programSuitable combination of education and experience may be consideredTechnical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and ability to apply in a municipal government settingSecurity Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion

WORK STATUS: Permanent Full-Time

HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm, 35 hours per week (overtime may be required during peak reporting periods) Flex options to work outside of these hours and hybrid may be available

SALARY: Level 7; $37.22 per hour as per NSGEU Local 222 Collective Agreement

WORK LOCATION: 40 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 2N5
