The Student Disability Center ( SDC ) Is part of the Office for Inclusive Excellence, specifically one of seven Cultural Resource Centers (CRCs) that support students at Colorado State University ( CSU ). The SDC is responsible for the assessment, recommendation, and provision of academic accommodations for students with disabilities, including those with chronic, physical, or mental health conditions. In addition, SDC acts as an advocate on behalf of disabled students to promote and support inclusive activities and policies in response to federal mandates of non-discrimination. SDC acts as a partner with students, faculty, and staff to ensure students with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, all activities and programs sponsored by the university with an emphasis on retention and graduation. Search Contact Emailalisha.zmuda@colostate.edu Position Summary This position serves as a significant support for the Student Disabilities Center’s Coordinator of Accessible Text Accommodations. The assistant is responsible for converting print material into alternative formats that contribute to the overall functioning of SDC as it relates to the accommodative needs of students with a variety of disabilities. The goal of alternative text is to provide equitable access to print material. Accommodations are provided based on the individual need of students and within the resources available to the office. The Assistant to the Coordinator of Accessible Text Accommodations is expected to contribute to the overall functioning of the office as it relates to accommodating students with disabilities in a university environment, specifically as it relates to alternative text formats. Position Minimum Qualifications + Demonstrated experience working with or understanding access and inclusion needs of people with disabilities. + Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office; including Excel, Word, Outlook, as well as Adobe Acrobat. Preferred Qualifications + Bachelor’s Degree in education, social work, psychology, counseling, student personnel/higher education. + Working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 Guidelines for accessibility. + Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and amendments. + Experience working in an educational setting with disabled students. + Familiarity with creating Braille content. + Excellent written communication skills. + Demonstrated experience relating to and collaborating effectively with a variety of constituents including students, faculty, staff, and community. + Demonstrated experience working within time constraints, balancing multiple demands. + Demonstrated organizational skills; detail oriented. + Familiarity with specialized software and hardware related to converting text into alternative formats such as: Wynn, OmniPage, Dolphin Easy Reader, ZoomText, Kurzweil, Read and Write Gold, and OCR . + Experience working with, and a familiarity of the unique needs of individuals with specific disabilities. + Demonstrated experience relating to and collaborating effectively with a variety of constituents including students, faculty, staff, and community. Essential Job Duties Job Duty CategoryAccommodations Duty/Responsibility + Aid in the process of converting text for students with disabilities that impact their ability to use physical textbooks each semester; using available conversion technology and other resources. + Directly convert specific material into alternative formats ( DOC , PDF , Braille, MP3, etc.) depending on students unique accommodation needs. + Assist the Coordinator in processing requests for accommodations. + Problem solve any challenges that present themselves in the conversion process. + Support training of student staff to assist in the conversion process (to fulfill the accommodative need) and the main office staff on accessible text procedures. + Ensure quality control of student staff work and that it meets accessibility needs of students. + Attend professional development to continue supporting students with disabilities.
