Academic Program Officer
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost invites applicants for an Academic Program Officer or Senior Academic Program Officer for Academic Affairs, reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. Commensurate with the candidate’s experience, the role will be filled at either the Academic Program Officer or Senior Academic Program Officer level. The role works in close collaboration with other staff and serves as a key resource to academic units across the University. The role is responsible for maintaining academic policies and associated documentation and guidance, updating undergraduate and graduate records during the annual review cycle, and supporting other related needs such as accreditation and legislative review processes. Success in this role requires a collaborative approach and the ability to navigate diverse perspectives and priorities in a dynamic academic environment. This is a generalist position that may be involved in other operational, programmatic, and strategic support activities as needed, and flexibility is key.

The Provost’s office advances academic excellence at all levels of the University. As the chief academic officer, the provost is responsible for UVA’s teaching, scholarship, and research at the schools, library, art museums, numerous centers and institutes, and international study programs, as well as faculty recruitment and retention.

Responsibilities:

The Academic Program Officer will assume responsibility for a range of duties which will vary in scope and level of complexity. Specific activities may include, but are not limited to:

Researching, analyzing and preparing briefings and reports for senior academic leaders on local, national and global issues (including compliance related) impacting higher educationResearching, analyzing and preparing briefings on academic policy related matters as needed & directedMaintaining/updating academic personnel policy & practice guidance documents as appropriate; this specifically includes updating the undergraduate and graduate records during the annual review cycleEvaluating and recommending or facilitating approval/declination of requests for exceptions to provost policies in accordance with developed guidelines and in coordination with other University entities as appropriateServing as a provost legislative review liaison, including reviewing and assessing the potential impact of proposed legislation, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders as needed or appropriateSupporting accreditation efforts, including contributing to the development and maintenance of documentation and processes aligned with accreditation standardsConsulting and collaborating with provost colleagues/schools/units/HR/legal counsel and individuals on policy, and compliance related mattersDrafting and reviewing academic program agreements (e.g., MOUs, articulation agreements, dual degree programs); includes ensuring alignment with institutionalpolicies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements; and serving as the primary point of contact for questions about the agreement process.May also serve on institutional committees and workgroups as the EVPP representative, where appropriate.

Required Qualifications and Experience

A minimum of four years of relevant experienceA master’s degree, or a combination of a bachelor’s degree with additional relevant experienceHighly effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated commitment to accuracy, details and deadlines. This includes the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret information, synthesizing and effectively conveying it to a variety of audiencesDemonstrated success in highly collaborative environments, particularly those involving individuals and groups with broad perspectives, priorities, and professional backgroundsDemonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a teamDemonstrated ability to work in a setting with varied and changing software platformsA clear understanding of, and commitment to, the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and academic programs.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

Previous professional experience in higher educationPrevious professional experience at the University of VirginiaTerminal graduate degree.

About the Position

This is an exempt, full-time position with benefits. Visit here for more information on the benefits of working at UVA. A hybrid work schedule may be possible. The anticipated hiring range is $90,000 to $125,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University performs background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position will not consider candidates who require immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
