Position Title Academic Coordinator, Upward Bound/TRIO Position Type Staff Full Time or Part Time Full Time Fixed Term/Tenure Track (Faculty Only) Department Student Support and TRIO Programs FLSA Non-Exempt Grade 11 Salary Range Hiring Salary Range $51,851 - $57,036 / Annually Union/Non Union Non Union Job Description Summary Performs general clerical/office activities to assist administrative and/or professional personnel. Incumbents interact with the general public by providing information and assistance as it relates to the department’s activities/services, rules and regulations. Work in reoccurring and incumbents are required to select the guidelines and reference that apply to the specific activity. New assignments are given with specific instructions and are not significantly different in nature or procedure from current and/or past assignments. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree in English, Reading, Mathematics, Science, Technology or related field from an accredited institution is required. Two years full-time or equivalence part-time experience in providing direct services in an educational or social service environment working with at risk students (teaching/tutoring) One-year prior secondary school teaching and one-year supervisory experience in an educational or social service setting preferred Criteria CRITERIA: The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Coordinate the selection, planning, organizing, and implementation of the academic curriculum. Assist the Project Director in various additional needed recruitment, selection, training efforts and evaluation of students, instructors, and tutors. Responsible for ensuring that the funded to serve number is met and sustained through coordinating recruitment efforts at the target high schools, exercising methods for improving and providing annual academic progress throughout the grant program to participants. Coordinate the academic assessment of participants, develop and monitor the Individual Academic Plans, progress reports, and participants’ overall performance. Provide academic, financial aid, career, and personal advising to participants. Schedule and facilitate group workshops and Saturday sessions. Develop and coordinate the educational and cultural activities, planning and implementation of academic year field trips, group college visits, and Saturday workshops and assume primary responsibility for cultural and social activities. Maintain productive working relationships with students’ parents, target school personnel, and community agencies. Assist with the implementation of project activities. Assess and evaluate project needs and provide the support, advisement, and leadership necessary to initiate and/or maintain appropriate quality services. Represent the project at all required or related meetings on and off campus. Coordinate the after school tutoring program. Assist the Project Director in the supervision and evaluation of program instructors and tutors. Perform other related duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of secondary student development theory and /or personality theory. Excellent listening and guidance skills, ability to easily relate to students and parents. Ability to communicate orally and in written format. Ability to use current Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to organize and implement activities for high school students. Ability to perform detailed work independently, and cooperatively in a team environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to participant’s academic and personal information. Ability to consistently demonstrate a positive attitude and maintain flexibility in program planning. Must have experience or demonstrated ability to work effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds including African American, Asian, and Latino youth. Experience organizing/managing events and field trips involving large groups desirable. Experience or training designing academic curriculum (secondary curriculum preferred) or corporate professional development components. Knowledge or experience in college admissions and financial aid. Job Requirements PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSMust have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must possess the ability to continually record information, such as draft correspondence/reports/documents/policies/procedures, conduct interviews, prepare case narratives, or prepare other lengthy documents using handwritten or mechanical means.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Driver’s License required – this position requires regular travel to assigned target schools, and other local area(s). Must be willing to operate college vehicle(s) when needed. Some evening and weekend hours required during the academic year, and extended hours during the six-week summer component Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English. As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
