The Academic Advisor will play an integral role in ensuring that the Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate program is aligned with the VT motto, "UT Prosim," 'That I May Serve' by participating in innovative student success initiatives and developing processes to further improve student services and enhance departmental support for individual student needs. This role is student-facing and supports both current and prospective Civil and Environmental Engineering students in the College of Engineering.
The following duties are core to the position:
• Provide academic and career advising services to approximately 300 civil and environmental engineering undergraduate students.
• Assist students in identifying appropriate educational and career options and analyzing each option.
• Monitor academic progress of students. Identify problem areas and refer students to appropriate campus resources (e.g. tutoring and counseling) for assistance.
• Interpret and explain college and university policies to students.
• Maintain student records and document all pertinent student information while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
• Assist in the awarding of departmental undergraduate scholarships.
• Participate in recruiting and advising activities for the university, college, and department, including but not limited to new student orientation, new student welcome, change of major information sessions, open house, prospective student visits, course request advising, and plan of study workshops.
• Communicate in a professional manner with departmental faculty, university administrators, researchers, staff, students, and campus visitors.
Occasional evening and weekend work will be required at times to support activities related to core job functions. The successful candidate will also be expected to perform other duties as assigned to support student success and the department’s mission.
