2026 Summer Intern – Manufacturing Engineering – Body/Paint, Additive, Polymers & Pre Production Operations

Work Arrangement:   Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a GM or supplier facility, as designated by the business, on a full-time basis.  Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location, which may be at various locations throughout the United States depending on business needs. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed. Selected candidates will be notified of their assigned location approximately 90 days prior to start date.

The Team: As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern for Body/Paint, Additive, Polymers and the Pre Production Operations teams, you will be exposed to various positions and assignments in plant and corporate staff locations throughout the United States sought to cultivate development and to educate. Positions in the two organizations are hands-on and engaging. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and be able to flex your creative muscles.

What You’ll Do:  Our plants are the groundwork for GM and a hotbed of innovation. We champion a spirit of innovation and creativity. Here you will be able to come to the table with fresh and new insights to help develop and implement into the plant. You will work on a variety of projects. This could include working on projects that support the development of manufacturing processes & technologies, equipment/tooling alternatives, sequence, and flow of operations for the effective utilization of personnel, material, machines, and facilities vital to produce parts/vehicles.   

Potential projects within Body/Paint, Additive, Polymers could potentially involve one or more of the following in support of new product program launches:                                        Development of Sequence of operations                                         Evaluation of Ergonomic / Human factors                                        Development / validation of man-machine interface                                  Development of efficient material flow process                                           Collaborate with suppliers to develop/select materials for the paint shop                  Short term travel to suppliers / assembly plants to support / validate tools and systems         Continuous process improvements                                     Collaborate with other centers to reduce energy and waste globally                                         

The Pre Production Operations team is currently seeking two exciting roles, a Maintenance Group Leader intern and a Continuous improvement process tech intern for Manufacturing. You will be exposed to various assignments in a manufacturing environment. Work involves the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment in an automotive assembly plant type environment.  Work is of a technical nature and decisions are made within the limits of general procedures and specifications. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and interface with new and exciting technologies.

Examples of Maintenance Group Leader assignments include: Diagnosis and correction of equipment malfunctionsPreventative MaintenanceEstablishes a course of action to accomplish completion of the job or projectsIdentifies and takes advantage of learning and continuous improvement opportunitiesAssist maintenance personnel in operation and maintenance of specialized equipmentTroubleshoots special maintenance and equipment problemsAssist in the coordination of machinery and equipment upgrade/install projectsWorking with and directing unionized skilled maintenance trades

Continuous Improvement - Process TechImplement and validate all process control plansDevelop quality processes that improve first time quality ratesReview and Implement processes that reduce Risk Priority numbers through PFMEA analysisWork with production, quality, & maintenance to improve quality metricsParticipate and champion GMS through basket weave processSupport production needs as necessaryWork hand in hand with maintenance to implement Tools and Equipment BulletinsEnsure department readiness for ISO, GMS BIQ, and PCP audits and calibrationsAssist with planning and prep for GA department TIP meetingsAssist with automation/innovation projects

Required Qualifications:     Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Additive Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Polymers, Welding, Operations, Material & Packaging Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, Welding Engineering, Welding Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Project ManagementMust be graduating between December 2026 and June 2028 Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months Must be willing to work in a plant environment
