The Sr. Director, Field-Based Medical Affairs will be responsible for ownership and management of field medical activities within a designated geographical territory and responsible for contributing to company-wide initiatives that support Chimerix strategy. This role will report to the Vice President of Medical Affairs and serve as a critical link between Chimerix and external healthcare providers (HCPs), establishing strong professional relationships with HCPs and other investigators within the territory by engaging in compliant exchange of scientific information, clinical trial support or other relevant discussions. Focusing on Neuro-Oncology, the Sr. Director, Field-Based Medical Affairs will provide a credible source for scientific expertise at Chimerix, collecting and reporting insights that will impact future medical and corporate strategy, the Chimerix Senior Leadership Team and other internal stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary scientific liaison within the assigned territory, providing expert medical information to healthcare providers (HCPs) and key opinion leaders (KOLs)Develop and maintain good working relationships with KOLs, facilitating effective scientific communication and exchange of medical information Gather relevant clinical & scientific insights from the assigned territory and reporting in a timely manner with internal stakeholders to inform and refine medical strategy and product developmentProvide detailed scientific presentations as required to expand awareness of the disease state and relevant clinical dataEnsure compliance with regulatory guidelines in all scientific interactions and communicationsLead key medical initiatives to support advisory boards, investigator-initiated trials (IITs), field-based educational directives and other relevant projectsSupport product launch activities by aligning regional territory plans with overall medical affairs and corporate strategyCollaborate with cross-functional teams, including commercial, regulatory and clinical development to align key medical messages and strategiesAttend and provide scientific support of US Medical Affairs activities and scientific sessions at regional and national congress meetingsServe as an internal scientific resource for training and educational supportQualifications MD, PharmD or PhD with 4+ years of experience in field medical affairs, with strong clinical knowledge and experience in oncology; Neuro-Oncology experience preferredProven ability to excel in scientific communication and build relationships with healthcare professionals across all levels (KOL/Academic, community, etc) and demonstrated proficiency building strong KOL/HCP relationshipsExtensive knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements related to field-based medical affairs activitiesExperience supporting product launch(es) in Oncology and successful track record of field engagements in pre-launch/launch/post-launch settingsAbility to work independently while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams within the organizationPreference for candidates who have worked both within small and medium/large biotech or pharma companies
Knowledge, Skills and Physical Requirements:
Knowledge of the pharmaceutical or biotech market landscape in oncology and rare diseases, including emerging trends and challengesAbility to develop and implement strategic plans for medical affairs activities, aligning with the overall goals of the organization.Possess a proven ability to effectively communicate complex information, with demonstrated fluency in articulating scientific concepts and dataSkilled at working cross-functionally with teams such as commercial, regulatory, and research & development to ensure aligned and cohesive strategies. Experience in small-sized biotech is highly preferable.Commitment to patient-centric approaches, ensuring the voice and needs of patients are represented in medical and scientific discussions.Ability to think creatively and strategically in developing medical strategies and designing plans for provider engagementMust have good judgment, ability to adapt and change in a shifting environmentA strategic, passionate, self-starter who takes initiativeMust work well in large and small teams, ability to work remotelyAbility to travel frequently; estimated 60-80% of time including occasional weekendsAbility to lift 50 pounds
